Taliban militants attacked an office of Afghanistan’s main security agency with a suicide car bomb and gunfire on Tuesday, killing at least 30 people and wounding over 320 in their first assault on the capital since declaring a spring offensive.

President Ashraf Ghani condemned the attack ‘in the strongest possible terms’ in a statement from the presidential palace, just a few hundred metres away from the scene of the blast in central Kabul.

The area has been surrounded by government forces and dozens of ambulances have rushed to the scene.

Witness said the attack began with a suicide car bomb during the height of the morning rush hour and security forces and militants then exchanged gunfire.

Pictures showed windows blown out at the front of an office that houses a National Directorate of Security (NDS) unit.
