ISIS rockets destroyed much of a 7,000-capacity refugee camp near the village of Igde along the Turkish and Syrian border late last week.

Escalating violence in the region has meant a new settlement in Kilis built to house 12,000 people fleeing the war in Syria stands empty.

Thousands of refugees are now trapped in the lawless border regions waiting to gain access to the camp but unable to until Islamist rebels stop shelling the camp.

The Kilis settlement was the glistening centrepiece of the EU’s recent €3billion deal with Turkey to accept migrants and refugees who had made it as far as Greece and Italy.

Under an agreement reached last month, migrants arriving on Europe’s shores are being returned to Turkey unless they make a credible claim for asylum.
