The quake struck near Vanuatu, and experts said tsunami waves could take place within 300km of the stretch of islands.

Vanuatu is made up of roughly 80 islands that cover around 1,300km.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said tsunami waves are possible within 300km of the quake epicentre soon after it hit.

However, soon afterwards they bizarrely backtracked on their initial assessment – saying the initial threat had “passed”.

In a statement they said: “Based on all data available … the tsunami threat from this earthquake has now mostly passed.”

The magnitude of the quake, which was initially measured at 7.2, was later revised down to 6.9.
