Republican Party establishment figures are beginning to talk openly about the possibility of replacing Donald Trump at July’s presidential nominating convention with a candidate who hasn’t run in a single primary.

‘Donald Trump excites a lot of enthusiasm. But he also excites a lot of anger within the Republican Party and outside of the Republican Party,’ Karl Rove said Thursday on the Hugh Hewitt radio show.

‘And a fresh face might be the thing that could give us a chance to turn this election and win in November against Hillary.’

Rove is a political analyst and former White House deputy chief of staff to President George W. Bush.

He didn’t name who the ‘fresh face’ might be, but that choice of words would point away from 2012 nominee Mitt Romney and toward House Speak Paul Ryan or another young, telegenic Republican politician.

The suggestion that someone other than the three remaining candidates – Trump, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and Ohio Gov. John Kasich – could become the GOP’s standard bearer won’t sit well with Trump, who complained Tuesday night on CNN that the party has treated him ‘unfairly.’

Party leaders will host a conference call Friday afternoon with reporters to explain the groundwork for what might be a messy July event in Cleveland, Ohio.
