Growing fears over a plot by Islamic State (ISIS), China, Russia or North Korea to interfere with the UK’s military has prompted a major review of security policy.

After a high level warning last year that the UK’s nuclear weapons could be wiped out by hackers, the stockpile will now be upgraded to counter emerging threats.

The US-built Trident missile system – Britain’s at-sea nuclear deterrent – will be among the equipment given increased protection under the plan.

Around 225 nuclear warheads are thought to make up Britain’s submarine-based nuclear arsenal.

Up to 12 can be mounted on each Trident missile, of which there are believed to be around 40 in service, with eight fitted to each vessel.

The Royal Navy has three nuclear-ready submarines in service with plans to replace the ageing fleet with a new generation of underwater deterrents.
