Most Working Class Jobs Will Soon Be Automated Away. How Are We Going to Deal with That?

“Most occupations that pay less than $20 an hour are likely to be automated into obsolescence.”

Should this sentence frighten us?

If so, why?

And what, if anything, does this tell us about our faith?

The sentence in question plays a central role in an interesting article entitled Robots Are Coming For Your Job, published this week by the Los Angeles Times. The article provided a sobering account of where we are and where we’re surely soon to be going where automated workforces are concerned:

A viral video released in February showed Boston Dynamics’ new bipedal robot, Atlas, performing human-like tasks: opening doors, tromping about in the snow, lifting and stacking boxes. Tech geeks cheered and Silicon Valley investors salivated at the potential end to human manual labor.

Shortly thereafter, White House economists released a forecast that calculated more precisely whom Atlas and other forms of automation are going to put out of work. Most occupations that pay less than $20 an hour are likely to be, in the words of the report, “automated into obsolescence.”

Let that one soak in.

Think of what this will mean for those who are unprepared and untrained to function, much less thrive, in a world where most, if not all, menial labor and even a great deal of skilled work is done by machines.

Think of what those who are choosing to ignore or avoid this coming scenario are setting themselves up for.

Then think of what your pastor and church are doing about it.
