ANGRY Mexicans have burnt effigies of US presidential hopeful Donald Trump, who sparked controversy by saying he would build a wall between Mexico and America to keep them out.

Hundreds of residents of La Merced, a poor neighbourhood in Mexico City, cheered and yelled “death” during their Easter rituals on Saturday as flames licked around the papier mâché model of the Republican candidate.
The mock-up of the controversial real estate tycoon was dressed in a blue blazer and red tie and featured his trademark tuft of blond hair.
Mexican media reported that similar scenes were played out across the country, from Puebla to the industrial hub Monterrey.
The burning is part of a Mexican Holy Week tradition where neighbourhoods burn effigies representing Judas Iscariot who betrayed Jesus.
