The ex-Chancellor, a Leave campaigner, challenged Treasury spokesman Lord Ashton of Hyde’s claim that Britain should stay in the EU on the reformed terms secured by David Cameron because it would have full access to Europe’s Single Market.

Lord Lawson said: “There is no reformed EU. The EU has proved itself to be unreformable.

“If the Single Market is such an economic miracle, why do you think that the EU is widely recognised as being something close to an economic disaster zone at the present time?”

“Why do you think that in the latest opinion poll in France, published in Le Monde a few days ago, 53 per cent of the French people said that they would like a referendum so that they could leave the EU?”

Lord Ashton said Lord Lawson was ignoring the fact that Britain had firm opt-outs from the parts of the EU “that do not work for us”, like the single currency, eurozone bailouts, a European army or any “EU superstate” while enjoying the “best of both worlds” benefits of having a free trade market of 500 million people on its doorstep.

UK Independence Party peer Lord Pearson of Rannoch told the House that small and non-EU Switzerland, Korea, Chile and Singapore had been able to make “vastly more free trade deals than has the EU, with its pretended clout, on our behalf.

He said: “Can the Government tell us why, as the world’s fifth largest economy, we could not do as well or better if we left the EU?
