According to figures from the Office for National Statistics, Britain has welcomed in 904,000 EU migrants since June 2010.

But during the same period, officials handed out 2.2 million national insurance numbers to EU migrants.

Now top civil servants, led by HMRC boss Lin Homer, are refusing to release data that shows the number of active NI numbers.

Andrew Tyrie, head of Westminster’s Treasury select committee, who has been leading attempts to get the data, was sent a message that “did not answer the question”.

Furious MPs have tried to obtain the data using Parliamentary questions.

But HMRC bosses have knocked back the attempts, along with multiple Freedom of Information Requests, claiming it would be too expensive.

Last year, 257,000 EU migrants arrived in the UK according to official figures – but 630,000 EU migrants were given NI numbers.

Tory MP David Davis, who is one of the MPs trying to obtain the potentially shocking information, has slammed the Whitehall officials for their handling of the controversy.

He said: “Why is this information not available? This is an important measure of how the country is run.

“At worst, it is misleading the public. The numbers are potentially about half of what they should be.”
