Toxic ash clouds were blown 2km into the sky from the 3,763-metre high Fuego volcano just 30 miles from Guatemala City in Guatemala, Central America, yesterday.
Disaster officials placed the area under an orange warning of danger that they may have to evacuate if things worsen.
It came after ash plumes drifted 25 miles west of the magma mount.
David de Leon, spokesman for the country’s disaster response agency, said the volcano was in a “new eruptive phase with increasing explosive activity.”
He said: “Rural communities surrounding the volcano, as well as the urban municipalities of San Pedro Yepocapa and Santa Lucia Cotzumalguapa de Escuintla, reported fine ash particles falling from the sky.
“We have ben in touch with local authorities and so far no evacuations have been deemed necessary.”
Fuego volcano is southwest of the capital Guatemala City.
