Senators passed a bill to toughen sanctions on Kim Jong-Un’s nuclear programme and condemned the state’s rocket launch last week.

The rocket launch came after the tyrant launched a satellite and tested a hydrogen bomb for the first time.

The bill would sanction anyone who helps to arm the secretive state, boost its trade or proliferate its human rights abuses.

US lawmakers also criticised China – North Korea’s lone major ally – for “blocking” the United Nations fro imposing any actions.

Republican senator Bob Corker said: “China, the very entity that could do something about this, is blocking the UN Security Council’s action toward this being done on a multilateral basis.”

Democrat Ben Cardin added: “It will be much more effective if we can get the international community to support us.”

Pyongyang has reportedly relaunched a plutonium production reactor and could begin to assemble a stockpile of plutonium for its nuclear reactor.
