Already this weekend up to 70,000 Syrians have fled Aleppo travelling north to the Bab al-Salameh border crossing and two other cities after shelling intensified.

Now fighting has followed them north to areas closer to the frontier, risking a further deterioration in the already desperate situation.

The Turkish border has been closed since Friday after 35,000 Syrians arrived, pushing the humanitarian crisis to a tipping point.

And the already desperate situation has deteriorated even further with Assad’s government troops taking control of the village of Kfeen in the northern countryside of Aleppo “after wiping out the last group of terrorists there”.

The capture of Kfeen brought troops less than 20 miles from the Turkish border – the closest point to the Turkish border reached by government forces since they lost the Mannagh air base in mid- 2013.

Efforts by the Syrian and Russian militaries to rid the country of rebel fighters have left few areas safe.
