Furious customers have taken to social media in their hundreds to vent after HSBC’s online banking services went down for the second day in a row.

The banking giant’s online personal banking page will not allow users to log for a second day, prompting users to take to social media with a variety of withering put-downs.

Referring to hit Channel 4 show the IT Crowd, Twitter user Paul Downes wrote: ‘Have you tried switching it off and back on again? #HSBC.’ Meanwhile, Amal Raj Vijay said: ‘Dude, where’s my account?’

Another social media user hopefully tweeted: ‘Dear HSBC. I’m trying to transfer 50k online and its gone missing. Please fix your online system and refund my money. I have no receipt #hsbc.’

Customers claim the page has been down intermittently since 8am yesterday and many are worried they could face fines if their bills are paid late as a result of the error.

HSBC has one of the largest current account bases in the UK, with roughly 17million personal and business customers.

The company said this afternoon they ‘profoundly’ apologise for the inconvenience, and added they are getting close to solving the ‘complex technical issue’ – but confirmed it was not a cyber-attack.

It said that any fees customers incur as a result of the problems will be waived.

One outraged customer Tweeted: ‘Not exactly the best time of year for your online services to be down @HSBC_UK when the majority of us have had pending transactions.’

Another wrote: ‘@HSBC_UK_Help when will the business internet banking be working its still down for the 2nd day – how can we run our business like this????’
