Time magazine chose German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, as their “Person of the Year,” in part for her wide acceptance of hundreds of thousands of Syrian and other Middle Eastern refugees and migrants over the past months, even to the point of creating angst among many Germans.
As reported by Agence France Presse:
The venerable American magazine lauded Merkel as the indispensable player in managing the prospect of Greek bankruptcy threatening the Eurozone, and the migrant and refugee crisis.
“For asking more of her country than most politicians would dare, for standing firm against tyranny as well as expedience and for providing steadfast moral leadership in a world where it is in short supply, Angela Merkel is Time’s Person of the Year,” wrote Time editor, Nancy Gibbs, in explaining the magazine’s decision to choose Merkel over runners-up Donald Trump, the billionaire businessman and leading GOP presidential contender, and the head of the Islamic State, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
