The Islamist militants made an audacious land grab attempt outside Mosul, in northern Iraq, but came unstuck when they ran into a hailstorm of bullets and bombs from Western forces.

Around 200 crazed terrorists were mown down by elite Canadian troops who rushed to the frontline to help pinned down Kurdish peshmerga forces protect their lands from the twisted invaders.

RAF bombers also joined in on the action, bombing the jihadis from the skies as their attempted invasion ended in panic and a full-on retreat.

A Canadian general revealed today how hundreds of ISIS fighters including car suicide bombers descended on what they thought was a weakened section of the Kurdish frontline in northern Iraq overnight.

But the hapless jihadis had not banked on running into elite Canadian special forces troops, who were camped with the Peshmerga forces operating in an advisory role.

US officials said at least 300 jihadis were involved in the assault during which they used bulldozers and tanks to try and breach allied lines. But the terrorists suffered overwhelming losses in the botched invasion, with two thirds of their force being obliterated before the rest fled in terror.

Colonel Steve Warren from the US military said: “This was the hardest punch ISIL had thrown since this summer, and the peshmerga defeated them.”
