At least ten refugees have been injured in an arson attack on a German migrant centre amid tensions over the number of asylum seekers entering the country.
The victims all suffered smoke inhalation after a fire was deliberately started at the building in Altenburg in eastern Germany.
Police, who have yet to reveal a motive for the attack, say two baby strollers in a corridor were set on fire in the early hours of Monday morning and that the damage is estimated at £16,000.
According to RT, district administrator Landrätin Michaele Sojka described the incident as ‘attempted murder’ while German Bundestag MP Frank Tempel, said the attack had a ‘high probability of a xenophobic background’.
The fire happened as it was revealed that Germany registered 964,574 new asylum seekers in the first 11 months of the year, putting Europe’s top economy on track for a million arrivals in 2015.
Some 206,101 migrants arrived in November alone, a new monthly record, up from a previous high of 181,166 in October, according to the interior ministry.
The number of arrivals was four times the total for all of 2014.
