Popular holiday spots for foreign tourists are believed to be among targets in an Islamic State plot to attack Thailand, according to a Russian security briefing.

The Khaosod English site is reporting that a leaked memo from Thai Police, which includes information from Moscow, records how 10 IS fighters from Syria avoided detection when they arrived Thailand in October.

The group then split up with four heading to Pattaya, while two travelled onto Phuket, two stayed in Bangkok and and two headed to an unknown destination.

However, the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) encouraged their Thai counterparts to boost security around ‘targeted areas that Russian authorities are concerned about, including venues associated with allies that have joined attacks on ISIS in Syria such as the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Belgium and Australia’.

The Bangkok based news site states that the document was labelled ‘urgent and secret’ but there was no information as to the group’s whereabouts or identities.

It’s believed the militants made their way into Thailand some time between October 15 and October 31 and are still at large.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has vowed to ‘punish’ those responsible for bringing down a Russian jet over the Sinai desert in late October.

The plane was blown up by a home-made bomb containing 1.5kg of explosives, resulting in the loss of 224 lives.
