THE campaign to get Britain out the European Union was given a huge boost last night as Denmark flatly rejected signing up to new laws demanded by Brussels.

Danish prime minister Lars Loekke Rasmussen was forced to admit there is “considerable scepticism about the European project” after he saw more than half his country’s population vote against closer integration.

Although an EU member, Denmark has enjoyed a long-held opt-out from Brussels’ justice and home affairs laws.

The Danish government and main opposition parties had pushed for the Scandinavian country to opt-in to 22 laws being demanded by the EU to crackdown on cross-border crime.

But 53 per cent of voters dismissed the ‘yes’ campaign – backed by the majority of Danish politicians – and voted ‘no’ to adopting the EU rules, with the country now able to hang on to its sovereignty.

The decision was hailed as “brave” by British campaigners hoping UK voters will also say no to Brussels in the upcoming EU referendum.

On a higher than expected turnout of 72 per cent, 46.9 per cent of the Danish population had voted in favour of handing over more powers to Brussels.

The ‘no’ campaign had been supported by the Danish People’s Party (DPP) – the second biggest party in the Copenhagen parliament and which props up the pro-EU government.

DPP leader Kristian Thulesen Dahl said: “The Danes know that when things are left to Brussels, they’re left a long way away in a non-transparent system where we lose a lot of our democracy.”
