Assault machetes? Yes, there are such things, if you’re a lunatic legislator from New York who believes a common tool used to clear brush and to cut sugar cane is the mass murderer’s next weapon of choice.

As reported by the New York Daily News, the state senator who successfully pushed the 2013 SAFE Act — New York’s uber-restrictive gun control law — now wants to ban the long-bladed knives, because he believes they are the next big threat to public safety.

Pictured holding a couple of obviously customized machetes that indeed appear to be formidable weapons, Sen. Tony Avella wants to criminalize their possession.

The paper, in its online edition, reported:

The sale of machetes should be outlawed after several recent attacks, a Queens pol said [recently].

State Sen. Tony Avella plans to introduce a bill to ban the possession of the scary blades in New York.
