SOLDIERS along Slovenia’s border with Croatia have begun erecting barbed wire fences and other “obstacles” to prevent desperate migrants from entering the tiny European nation.

Slovenian officials have promised a tough response to stem the unrelenting flow of people flooding into Europe.
Around 180,000 people, many fleeing war in Syria and Afghanistan, have entered Slovenia since mid October, most of them heading north to Austria and then Germany.
Army trucks carrying wire fencing arrived in the border village of Veliki Obrez in south eastern Slovenia early this morning.
Dozens of camouflaged troops set to work building the barrier aided by forklift trucks and CCTV police vans.
More than a mile of wire had been erected by lunchtime at one location.
But Prime Minister Miro Cerar, whose country last month found itself on the main route for thousands of migrants after Hungary sealed its southern borders, insisted that its border would remain open.
He said that a “humanitarian catastrophe” was likely if Slovenia didn’t act soon, but added that the “technical barrier” would be used to direct the refugee flow, not to close the 400 mile border, as Hungary has done.
The PM said yesterday that the country, the smallest on the migrant route, does not have the resources to shelter large numbers over the harsh winter if Austria shut its border.
The main point of disagreement in the EU is over mandatory national quotas to share out asylum seekers among the 28 member states.
