The Senate, in a dead-of-night vote, passed a budget deal that critics say will give President Obama a blank check in terms of lame duck spending.

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., for instance, blasted the vote in a floor speech as an example of “two parties getting together in an unholy alliance and spending us into oblivion,” the Associated Press reported.

And Sen. Ted Cruz, who’s running for president, along with Paul, canceled his campaign events to return to Washington, D.C., and call for a halt to the bill’s passage in a late-hour speech.

“[This is a] diamond-encrusted, glow-in-the-dark Amex card [for federal spending,” Cruz said, AP reported. “It’s a pretty nifty card. You don’t have to pay for it, you get to spend it and it’s somebody else’s problem.”

Cruz also called Republican Majority Leader Mitch McConnell “the most effective Democratic leader” of modern times.

The Senate approved the deal with a 64-35 voice shortly after 3 a.m., when Paul spoke.

“Both sides of the aisle have what I would call sacred cows,” Paul said, in his eleventh hour plea for fellow senators to hold up its passage, the Hill reported. “On the right, they have the sacred cow of military contracts … The left wants more welfare. Should we give Congress more money? Hell no.”

But other senators said Paul was simply seeking political attention.
