Former US congressman Ron Paul blamed the US and Europe for their aggressive policies in the Middle East and elsewhere (including military campaigns in Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya) which resulted in the unprecedented influx of refugees to Europe and urged the West to “stop meddling in the affairs of other countries” to solve the issue.

The Republican from Texas, who ran for president three times, called the current crisis “man-made” and “government-made.”

“The reason so many are fleeing places like Syria, Libya, Afghanistan and Iraq is that US and European interventionist foreign policy has left these countries destabilized with no hopes of economic recovery. This mass migration from the Middle East and beyond is a direct result of the neocon foreign policy of regime change, invasion, and pushing ‘democracy’ at the barrel of a gun,” Paul wrote.

Western-led military interventions were often sparked without any thought given to possible repercussions and fueled primarily by a desire to oust a certain leader, like Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad or former Iraq’s leader Saddam Hussein.

“Assad may not be a nice guy, but the forces that have been unleashed to overthrow him seem to be much worse and far more dangerous. No wonder people are so desperate to leave Syria,” Paul noted, adding that Islamic State did not exist prior to the US invasion of Iraq in 2003.
