Bass Pro Shops laid off “fewer than 60” employees at its corporate headquarters on east Kearney Street in Springfield and at a woodworking shop in Nixa, the company confirmed Friday.

Paul Shore, Bass Pro Shops vice president of human resources, said the company also laid off an average of six employees at most of its retail stores across the country.

“We did have some workforce reductions, yes,” Shore said. “But keep in mind in the Ozarks area we employ about 5,800 people and we’ve added 2,300 positions in the Ozarks in the last three years. This was just something we needed to do to be more efficient and lean and to continue to be a healthy company.”

Shore said the laid-off employees would be offered a severance package and continuation of benefits and would be welcome to apply for open jobs elsewhere in the company.

He noted that the company is still on track to open eight new stores this year. He said Bass Pro currently employs more than 22,000 people overall.
