Fewer than 10 people in Amarillo from West Africa have been asked to stay in quarantine until Jan. 27 to be monitored for Ebola virus symptoms, city health leaders said at a news conference Friday at Amarillo City Hall.

So far, all Ebola tests have come back negative, Amarillo Public Health Authority Dr. Roger Smalligan said.

Public health officials are following guidelines set forth by the Texas Department of State Health Services and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, he said.

The Public Health Department will monitor the travelers daily through the recommended 21-day monitoring period, which will conclude Jan. 27.

“As far as the quarantine, that’s voluntary, but we’ve got legal paperwork ready to go to keep them quarantined. But there’s no reason to believe that will become necessary,” said city spokeswoman Sonja Gross.
