Grassroots conservatives at a news conference Wednesday served notice on congressional GOP leaders to keep the agenda in the lame duck session to a bare minimum and avoid the shenanigans that sometimes develop.

“All I want for Christmas is for Congress to go home,” said Tea Party Nation President Judson Phillips.

Congress is notorious for being unaccountable during lame-duck sessions, the period between an election and the next term.

Obamacare is probably the best-known product of such sessions.

“Members of this lame-duck Congress have two more years before they face voters again, and many of them are leaving Congress, either voluntarily or involuntarily, so they are unaccountable. This is ready made for mischief with spending measures, tax measures and crony capitalism giveaways,” said Ernest Istook, a former Republican member of the House from Oklahoma.

The lame duck must approve funding to keep the government operating at previously agreed-upon spending levels, a legislative instrument known as a continuing resolution, or CR.

But up for grabs is how long Congress will agree to continue funding the government.

Incoming Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said he wants the lame duck to take care of as much business as possible, and some are taking that to mean it should make spending decisions affecting the next 10 months.
