The 44-year-old woman and her husband and a man who flew to Madrid from Nigeria are all hospitalized in isolation, though only the 44-year-old nurse has shown symptoms and been diagnosed with Ebola. A second nurse tested negative for the virus. The women changed a diaper and moved soiled clothing belonging to a Ebola-afflicted Spanish priest who died Sept. 25 at the Carlos III hospital after doing missionary work in Sierra Leone. Some 50 people in Madrid are being monitored for symptoms of the disease as medical workers complain of substandard training and equipment.

A Spanish nurse contracted Ebola while treating an ill missionary priest in Madrid, sending the 44-year-old woman and her husband into hospitalized isolation, health officials there announced.

The woman was hospitalized Sunday and diagnosed Monday, more than a week after she showed signs of the disease and some 12 days after she likely contracted the disease while caring for Manuel Garcia Viejo, who died Sept. 25 in Madrid after contracting the virus while doing missionary work in Sierra Leone.

The woman had changed his diaper and removed infected material from his room after he died, health officials said. She’d also treated another Spanish priest infected with Ebola who died at the hospital, Carlos III, in August.

Officials have preemptively hospitalized a second nurse and a man who arrived in Madrid from Nigeria. The second nurse was later cleared after testing negative, officials said Tuesday.

The diagnosed nurse is in stable condition while her husband is “OK and relatively calm,” said Fernando Simon, the Health Ministry’s chief coordinator for health alerts and emergencies.
