Health officials have announced today that three deaths have been attributed to the disease tuberculosis in the Atlanta area. The three victims were part of the city’s homeless population and it is currently unknown what other connections or interactions the three may have had. However, county health officials are investigating the three in order to get a greater handle on the sudden increase of tuberculosis that has seemingly circulated through the city’s many homeless shelters. At least another 29 people have been infected with the disease after residing at a homeless shelter, although they may not have had direct contact with one another.

The most recent of the three deaths attributed to the outbreak occurred last week at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. As of yet, no other information has been released about the victims by the Department of Public Health. Some have claimed that this may make tracing the outbreak difficult, especially for those who may have been exposed to the disease through close contact with those infected. However, releasing too much information on a patient’s medical condition violates the individual’s right to privacy and the Department of Public Health has stated that they are undertaking all necessary precautions to prevent further spread of the illness.
