Kentucky Senator Rand Paul tried to explain the reason ISIS, now merely IS or the Islamic State, has gobbled up large areas of Iraq and Syria, but the partisan Republican Sean Hannity would have none of it.
During an interview on Hannity’s show Paul rightly noted “one of the reason’s they’re stronger is that we have been allied with them in Syria we’ve been funding Islamic rebels.”
Hannity tried to play the standard shell game by insisting Obama and the Democrats are to blame for the situation.
“They’re emboldened because we’ve been supporting them,” Paul said in late June on NBC’s Face the Nation. “I personally believe that this group would not be in Iraq and would not be as powerful had we not been supplying their allies in the war.”
Rand Paul’s explanation for the rise of ISIS is in sharp contrast to that of his Republican colleagues who uniformly blame Obama and the Democrats for squandering a supposed victory in Iraq.
Both Republicans and Democrats have avoided the truth. The United States not only supports ISIS, it trained ISIS mercenaries in Jordan and currently runs the ISIS operation out of the U.S. embassy in Ankara, Turkey. The U.S. has passed weapons along to ISIS through the Syrian Revolutionary Front and subsequently al-Nusra.
