About half the population of the United States wants more publicly funded benefits and larger government. These people vote for politicians who support that view. The other half wants lower taxes, fewer benefits, and smaller government. They vote for candidates who support that view. People on both sides argue and lobby for their positions and nothing changes.
Those who favor larger government have an optimistic view of government’s ability to solve problems. Peter Schuck, in a new book, Why Government Fails so Often (Princeton, 2014), does not share their optimism. According to Schuck, government simply isn’t able to even comprehend complex social problems. Instead, what government is good at is mobilizing the private sector, which is much more able than government to address these problems. According to Schuck, “Government’s best practice is to set goals and arrange incentives so society’s knowledge can be put to use by its dispersed possessors.” quoted in WSJ, June 10, 2014.
