The Middle East Respiratory Syndrome caused by the Corona virus (MERS-CoV), which has killed hundreds of people in the world, may penetrate into Vietnam, health authorities warn.

The Vietnamese Ministry of Health has called for the prevention of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome caused by the Corona virus (MERS-CoV), which has killed over 190 people worldwide, from penetrating into Vietnam.

Tran Dac Phu, head of the ministry’s Preventive Health Department, made the call after warning that MERS-CoV has spread to 19 countries, affecting 636 patients and killing 193 of them since it first appeared in Saudi Arabia in 2012.

From a number of Middle East countries, the syndrome has spread to Europe, America, Africa and Asia, Phu said, adding 75 percent of the recent number of patients were infected with the virus through the transmission from human to human.

The Corona virus causes a mortality rate of as high as 30 percent, Phu said.

Vietnam has yet to detect any people infected with MERS-CoV, but the virus may penetrate into the country in the future, as there are a large number of Vietnamese guest workers in the Middle East, he added.
