The second imported case of the deadly MERS respiratory virus in the United States has been confirmed in Orange County, Florida, and involves a health care provider from Saudi Arabia who arrived in the United States on May 1, the Centers for Disease Control announced Monday.

The unidentified patient, who lives and works in Saudi Arabia, traveled from Jeddah to London then on to Boston, Atlanta and finally to Orlando, Fla.

CDC director Tom Frieden told reporters in a conference call that the patient entered the hospital on May 8.

He said Florida health officials initially determined that the virus was MERS and that the CDC confirmed the finding Sunday night.

Frieden said the CDC is reaching out to all the airlines on which the patient traveled, but that the risk to people traveling with a person infected with MERS is not known. The CDC said more than 500 people could have been in close proximity duringwith the patient.

CDC officials cautioned that while the patient felt the symptoms of the MERS virus while traveling from Saudi Arabia, it was not known if the patient was infectious at that time.
