Ebola Virus: Health Ministry puts Edo on Red Alert

BENIN CITY- The Federal Ministry of Health has alerted Edo State on the recent outbreak of Ebola virus disease in the West Africa sub-region.

State Commissioner for Health, Dr. (Mrs.) Arhanuwa Eregie disclosed this yesterday in a statement broadcast.

Consequently, the State Commissioner for Health, has alerted the people of the state, urging them to be conscious of the outbreak of the virus in the State and Nigeria at large.

According to her, though no case of this deadly disease has been found in Edo State and Nigeria at large, there is the urgent need for everyone to be extra vigilant in order to prevent the disease which is highly contagious.

The Commissioner disclosed that Ebola virus is a deadly infectious virus hemorrhagic disease that affects humans, saying it is usually transmitted from animals to humans and from one infected person to another by direct close contact through body fluids and secretions. Such animals, she said included fruit bats, monkeys, chimpanzees and gorillas.

The symptoms and signs of the illness, she added, included sudden onset of fever, weakness, muscle, pains, headache and sore throat, followed by vomiting, diarrhea, rash and impaired kidney and liver functions.
