Whenever there’s a report on a spying attack carried out by clandestine groups, media outlets are quick to condemn the attackers, but what few outlets actually report frequently and often fail to condemn is the massive volume of electronic spying attacks that are actually carried out by government agencies.
According to a Data Breach Investigations Report that was recently unveiled by Verizon Communications, cyber espionage has increased considerably since the last report was released in April 2013. What researchers called a three-fold increase is linked to the spying incidents that were attributed to government actors. Government-related spying programs account for 87 percent of all reported spying cases.
The research shows that the spying cases registered involved a series of techniques such as phishing, the use of rootkits, network scanning and even the use of what is called “brute force” attacks.
