One of our last polls indicated that about 30% of our readers have not started their pandemic preps and 55% of our readers had started but not completed. Some recent influenza news could be a motivator.

Here’s some very recent headlines:

“First death from new bird-flu strain fuels fears of pandemic” There is a new influenza strain in Asia, H10N8. It’s said to be a new mutation. Researchers say that it hasn’t learned to pass from human-to-human yet. Two people have died.

“Mexico on Alert over H1N1: 2994 cases, 314 deaths registered” If these numbers are correct, that is a 10% mortality rate! The article goes on to say that there are three strains active in Mexico this season but H1N1 is responsible for over 2500 of the cases.

“Flu Deaths Continue to Mount” San Diego is reporting that the 2012-13 and the 2013-14 seasons are the deadliest flu seasons on record!

“Why Are People Dying from the H1N1 Flu Virus?” The doctor in this article states that the flu hasn’t mutated, it’s mainly just killing individuals with “underlying problems”. You can believe that if you want to but the fact is that the numbers of dead are climbing and it’s not just the very old and the sickly young people that are perishing. You can find numerous articles about healthy young adults being taken by this virus.

It looks to me like the “frog in a pot” analogy could be applied here. The flu season is always something that comes around and the news about people dying from it just doesn’t make it to the front page, especially now with the Olympics, Super Bowl etc. Flu news only makes the front page when it’s sensational, like when airports are restricted or people in Mexico or China have to wear masks which, in my opinion, is too late to be learning about a pandemic.
