EDINBURG – Hidalgo County health officials reported an uptick in the number of H1N1-related deaths.

At least 79 H1N1 cases have been reported in the county, officials said. Fifteen of those cases were fatal.

“Of the 15 fatalities, 14 of them were H1N1, and one was a Type A influenza, which is a H3N2,” Hidalgo County Health Director Eddie Olivarez said.

“The majority have been adults in their 30s,” he said.

Most of the people who died had pre-existing health problems.

“Diabetes seems to be the number one thing. Diabetes and obesity are the highest incidents of pre-existing illnesses … with H1N1,” he said.

More than 25 percent of all Hidalgo County residents have diabetes, officials said. Obesity is even more common, they said.
