PHOENIX (KSAZ) –
The number of flu cases in the state shot up this past week and it’s now widespread in Arizona.

The flu is one of the reasons a valley toddler is in a medically induced coma at the hospital, because earlier this week, she came down with the H1N1 flu virus.

2 1/2 year-old Shiann was born with a birth defect, so she’s already extremely vulnerable to viruses.

As we’ve seen in the past, the H1N1 strain has proven to be deadly even for healthy people.
Doctors are treating the toddler with more than a dozen different medications that’s why they put her in a coma. All her parents can do, is wait and pray for her to pull through this.

Shiann Sloan was born with an omphalocele a condition where her intestines were formed outside of her body. So when she gets sick, it’s very scary for her and her parents.

“We have to be very extra careful because it hits her twice as hard sometimes literally holding her life in the balance when she does get sick” said Shiann’s father Brandon Sloan.

Shiann’s parents took her to the hospital 6 days ago because she was having trouble breathing.

“When we heard it was H1N1 our hearts sank because that was the one you heard not too long ago there were a lot of deaths and neurological mishaps with the virus” said Brandon.
