The H1N1 virus has killed a second person in the Bay Area this flu season, authorities said Tuesday.
The 48-year-old woman, who died last week, was the first flu death in Contra Costa this season, said the county’s Health Services spokeswoman, Kate Fowlie. The victim suffered from underlying health conditions in addition to the virus, which is also known as swine flu.
The county has received reports of 18 people younger than 65 with H1N1 in hospitals throughout Contra Costa, Fowlie said.
In December, a 41-year-old Santa Clara County woman became the first H1N1 virus death in the Bay Area this flu season, according to Santa Clara County Public Health officials. They said they have received at least seven reports of severe flu cases this season, six of which were confirmed to be H1N1.
