A Saskatchewan family is hoping others will learn the importance of getting a flu shot following what could be yet another H1N1-related death in the province.
Saskatoon’s Grant Closson told News Talk Radio Friday about his 35-year-old Regina cousin who had fallen ill on Dec. 29.
“They found him to have pneumonia, common flu and confirmed H1N1 as well,” Closson said.
His cousin was admitted to the ICU ward at the Pasqua Hospital.
“[He] fell sick and [was] hospitalized and soon after fell so ill [he] had to be induced into a coma. It just got worse from there on in.”
Closson said his cousin died on Saturday night.
At this time the province has not confirmed any more H1N1 flu-related deaths besides the ones announced Friday. Saskatchewan’s Deputy Chief Medical Health Officer Denise Werker did confirm three people had died after getting the H1N1 strain of influenza. Two of them were kids under five while the other was a middle aged person. All had underlying health conditions. But it couldn’t be said whether H1N1 was the main cause of death or just a contributing factor.
