Really, I mean it.

We can have a debate over whether the wrong is due to stupidity or intentional misconduct, but it doesn’t matter if you’re on the receiving end of the advice and follow it. The outcome remains the same whether you are hosed due to intent or idiocy.

Let’s start with one of the alleged “holy grail” items in America: Dietary advice. You’re told to eat in a “pyramid” (although they’ve tried to change this to “plate slices” recently) which bases most of your caloric intake on grains, then vegetables, then fruits and finally a small bit of fat-containing meats and sweets.

There’s a problem with this, however, in that from a metabolic perspective there is very little difference in terms of body processing between eating a slice of bread and a spoon of sugar of the same mass.

In addition there is no particular warning about “engineered” oils; indeed there are all sorts of claims that margarine and similar products (which do not exist in nature) are “better for you” than, for example, butter.

Americans have followed this advice for the last 30 years or so and have been rewarded with ever-escalating diabetes, obesity and deteriorating health. This is often blamed on our “sedentary” lifestyle but in point of fact for those who lived in non-agricultural environments those people weren’t doing vigorous work before these “recommendations” were shoved down everyone’s throat.
