EMMA FODEN, a mother of three from West Sussex, is just one consumer who is feeling increasingly alarmed by soaring food prices.

She says: “Eighteen months ago a big supermarket shop including a bottle of wine would have been about £70, a year ago it crept up to £100 and now it’s regularly £130 and sometimes with no wine.”

The 39-year-old, who runs her own catering company, adds: “It amazes me that 2.5kg of potatoes is now 55p more expensive than this time last year, at £2.50. Branded butter regularly costs £1.56-£1.70, whereas it used to be under £1. So I now buy budget supermarket butter at £1.19 a pack.”

To counter the rising “panic” that record food prices instil in her, she selects as many own-brand items as she can.

“A big emotive change was downgrading from Andrex loo paper to supermarket own brand. As for organic, I can’t justify buying it any more.”
