Storm surges, flooding and power outages expected due to Sandy

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — Hurricane Sandy remained on track Monday to what’s forecast to be an overwhelming hit for the Eastern Seaboard, threatening almost 50 million people with flooding and power outages.
New York, the nation’s most densely populated city, transformed into a virtual ghost town in readying for Sandy’s destructive winds and what’s expected to be record storm surges.
The massive storm, with sustained winds of 90 miles an hour, strengthened over the Atlantic Ocean. Sandy’s center on Monday turned toward the New Jersey coast, the National Hurricane Center said.
Power had already been knocked out to tens of thousands of homes and businesses along the coast, from North Carolina to Connecticut.
“The worst is still coming, so keep yourself safe,” New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo urged Monday ahead of Sandy’s full brunt.
In addition to New York and New Jersey, states in the storm’s path include Connecticut, Delaware, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Maryland.
And, while Sandy had yet to make landfall, streets in New York, Maryland and New Jersey were already under water, as winds and water pushed ahead of the hurricane.
