Due to an estimated 50 million dollars of debt, Robert Schuller’s Crystal Cathedral has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Some would say, theologically, they’ve been bankrupt from the beginning. Nevertheless, The Hour Of Power, reportedly, “the first and longest running television ministry in history,” has clearly made both Schuller and his church, household names – names that may soon be recognized more for fiscal failure than spiritual success. Schuller was not only the church’s founding pastor, but also the author of many popular books including, Self-Esteem: The New Reformation.

Now, I don’t know if this is the beginning of the end of an ecclesiastical icon ABC News called “America’s original megachurch,” but it should serve as a sobering reminder to all fashion-forward churches, just how fleeting and fragile our crystal cathedrals are “under the sun” and how easily they can be shattered and scattered to the wind.

Sometimes the Lord compels us to reconsider our values and priorities as he did among His own disciples when addressing their adoration of the Temple, recorded in Matthew 24:1-2, Luke 21:5-6 and again in Mark 13:2, which reads: “And Jesus answering said unto him, Seest thou these great buildings? there shall not be left one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.”
