Once again Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals was in play in Oakland, California the night after a judge in Los Angeles sentenced, Johannes Mehserle, a white former transit officer to the minimum sentence of two years in prison in the shooting death of a 22-year old unarmed black man on a California train platform. The case against the defendant provoked racial unrest at every turn in Oakland, the scene of the killing on New Year’s Day 2009 and Oakland police were on alert for possible more rioting following a sentence that many thought was too light. What was initially billed as a legal assembly soon turned into an illegal assembly when the anarchists with bandana-covered faces turned up to participate and that was when officers in riot gear started making arrests. And Mayor Ron Dellums, always an apologist for Communist tyranny, said he understood the pain and disappointment sparked by the sentence.
