GULF OF MEXICO — BP said it may have a “plan B” to stop the massive oil spill into the Gulf, but it could take weeks.

The company said crews are going to park the giant containment box that was meant to stop the spill farther away from where thousands of gallons of oil continues to spew from what’s left of a broken rig.

BP said ice formed inside the box on the deep Gulf floor, making it useless.

Instead, the company said it is now considering trying to pump mud and concrete directly into the well to stop the leak — but that process may take up to three weeks, and until then, no one really knows where the oil will go.

“The maddening thing is that it’s indeterminate,” said, said Admiral Thad Allen, with the U.S. Coast Guard. “What we have is a 5,000-barrell spill every day, with the wind shifting around, and it could go any direction based on the wind — and it’s really kind of maddening, because you can resource the spill that’s coming ashore when you know the direction it’s coming from, but it can back off and it can even come again. So the entire Gulf pretty much has to be on guard, and that’s what we’re doing.”

The company had warned their initial attempt with the containment box might not work, because that type of operation had never been tried so far down below the surface.
